About Us

Not every Black student is specifically looking for a Black tutor. We get that.

But some do.

Some students just want to learn from someone who shares their lived experience.

We don't just make this possible for Black students. We make it easy.

MY STORY

This business was born through my own experiences with the ACT.  As I was going through my schooling, it always felt like the system was not set-up for somebody like me to succeed. My parents always had to juggle work and my five siblings, which meant it was always up to me to figure out what was going on in all my classes. And after our neighborhood was struck by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, LA, I had to split my time between school and helping to rebuild our life. So when I learned about the ACT in high school, I thought to myself “wait – you’re telling me, on top of all the other stuff I have to deal with, there’s a test I’ve gotta take that’s gonna decide my entire life?” It felt impossible.

I had always been a good student, and I dreamed of going to a top-tier school, but for some reason the ACT just did not click with me. The first time I took it, I got a 16. I signed up for a high-end test prep course, but I quickly realized it was not for me. Everybody in the course had scores in the high 20's and 30's - that's what I was AIMING for! It didn't help that I was always the only Black person in the room. When I tested again, I only raised my score to an 18. If I wanted to go to the school of my dreams, I realized I had to do it myself.

So I practiced. And I practiced. And I practiced. And at the end of the day, I walked away with a 32. With this score came 1.5 million dollars in scholarships and opportunities I could have only dreamed of, including a full-ride scholarship to my dream school, Washington University in St. Louis. I completed three degrees during my time there: two undergraduate degrees in Finance and Computer Science, and a Master's degree in Computer Science. Additionally, I was a member of the Varsity Women's Golf Team.

Ever since this experience, I have devoted my life to teaching these exams. I created Top Tutors for Us so that Black kids could finally have a test prep company that's made for them. Anyone can make their dreams come true - but you don't have to do it alone.
